A Case Study: YWCA Sonoma County and West County Community Services

In January 2012, the YWCA Sonoma County (YWCA) and West County Community Services (WCCS) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the provision of counseling services to domestic violence survivors. This case study follows their journey from partner exploration to negotiation and implementation, focusing on the experiences, breakthrough leadership moments, and personal commitments of these leaders to the clients and communities they serve.

The Power of Partnership

There is a growing awareness among domestic violence organizations about the power of integrative partnerships. A barrier organizations face in exploring such opportunities is the dearth of information from the field on how strategic restructuring has enhanced the effectiveness of organizations like their own. The Power of Partnership features four case studies showing how integrative forms of collaboration have enabled domestic violence organizations—and their partners—to capitalize on their strengths, develop new solutions, and more effectively serve the community.

Cultural Competency in California's Domestic Violence Field

This report, prepared for Blue Shield of California Foundation by RDP Consulting, explores how a cultural competency framework could offer a more viable and useful approach to service provision and prevention efforts for the DV field. The report provides a brief review of the DV field’s origins, summarizes its major successes, reviews the known data on DV in California (specifically among certain demographic groups), and discusses why these communities may not access services — and how a cultural competency framework could help address issues of accessibility.

Unsung Heros - Military Families After Ten Years of War

December, 2011

Until the recently, domestic violence (DV) among military veterans has been an under-investigated issue. Blue Shield of California Foundation invested in Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) to bring this issue to the attention of policymakers and legislators. IAVA’s December 2011 report, ‘Unsung Heroes’, discusses DV as one of the many potential risk factors for military veterans returning home.

Navigating a New Course: A Domestic Violence Organization Steers Towards a More Sustainable Future

Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF) profiles the Center for Community Solutions, a Blue Shield Against Violence grantee, as a case study of how a domestic violence organization worked towards long-term financial sustainability. Using financial analysis tools provided by NFF, the Center for Community Solution was able to successfully plan for their financial future.

Funding With an Oversized Impact -- Blue Shield Against Violence Core Support Initiative 2008-2010

This report, prepared for Blue Shield of California Foundation by Touchstone Consulting, explores both how and why BSAV core support funding has had an impact on domestic violence service providers. Information for this report was drawn from reports submitted by 2008 – 2010 BSAV Core Support Initiative grantees. This report paints a dramatic picture of the needs of domestic violence service providers and the important impact that even modest investments of private funding can make for agencies that provide essential safety net services.
