2009 Blue Shield of California Foundation Training Institute

In September 2009, Blue Shield Against Violence (BSAV) hosted a third annual Training Institute at the Annual Meeting of the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence. The Training Institute was crafted around the results of an assessment tool offered to BSAV grantees in early 2009. The Core Capacity Assessment Tool (CCAT), developed and owned by TCC Group, measures four core capacities: adaptive, management, leadership, and technical. Grantee responses to the CCAT informed four workshops aimed at building skills and knowledge of leaders in the domestic violence field in: (1) fundraising, (2) organizational assessment, (3) financial leadership, and (4) theory of change development for the domestic violence movement.

The guidance and support of the BSAV DV Advisory Group is deeply appreciated.  Members include:

  • Eliza Daniely-Woolfolk, Executive Director, Alternatives to Domestic Violence
  • Rae Eby-Carl, Deputy Director, Lake Family Resource Center
  • Patti Giggans, Executive Director, Peace Over Violence
  • Joelle Gomez, Executive Director, Women's Center of San Joaquin County
  • Verna Griffin-Tabor, Executive Director, Center for Community Solutions
  • Kathleen Krenek, Executive Director, Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence
  • Beckie Masaki, Executive Director, Asian Women's Shelter
  • Ben Schirmer, Executive Director, Rainbow Services
  • Tara Shabazz, Executive Director, California Partnership to End Domestic Violence
  • Gael Strack, Chief Executive Officer, National Family Justice Center Alliance

2007 "Think Tank" Session

In September of 2007, Blue Shield Against Violence hosted a "Think Tank" session for participants at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence. This session was built around survey data received from nearly 65 percent of Blue Shield of California Foundation's Shelter Initiative grantees.

The general organizational development portion of the survey was based on the book, "Lifecycles of Nonprofits" by Susan Kenny Stevens, PhD. We are grateful to Dr. Kenny Stevens for permission to use her work.

The policy capacity assessment questionnaire was used with permission from the Alliance for Justice in Washington, D.C. The questionnaire was developed for foundations to guide them in evaluating the benefits of their support. Again, we received special permission from the Alliance for Justice to adapt their questionnaire for use in an online survey.

Links to the "Think Tank" introductory presentations and materials are provided below.
