Core Support Initiative

Since 2002, Blue Shield Against Violence has awarded 10.8 million in core support to more than 100 California domestic violence organizations. In 2010, we granted over $3 million in awards through the 2010 − 2012 BSAV Core Support Initiative.

BSAV provides flexible, core support funding to domestic violence service providers so that they are empowered to determine and address the priorities of their organizations. These dollars meet today’s needs by:

  • Covering operating expenses and administration;
  • Sustaining existing programs and core services;
  • Paying for expenses not covered by government and other funders;
  • Increasing an organization’s ability — and credibility — to leverage other funding; and
  • Covering unanticipated expenses or critical needs.

And they help lead change for tomorrow by positioning organizations to respond positively, effectively, and creatively to challenges and new opportunities.

"The general operating support has helped our organization ensure that no victim of domestic violence is ever turned away and no family is denied safety."
Joelle Gomez, Executive Director, The Women’s Center of San Joaquin County

What We Do and Don’t Fund

The Foundation currently provides general operating support to domestic violence service providers, every two years, through an invitation-only, initiative process. The next invitation will be released in 2012.
